Facebook Login Page and Long Tail Keywords

The most interesting result in recent months regarding popular keywords is the surprising appearance of ‘facebook login’ For some unknown reason facebook login is one of the most popular keywords on Google, Yahoo and MSN Bing in 2010.

Why is this happening?

There are a number of possible reasons for Facebook Login to be appearing as a popular keyword.

The first is that people hope that Google, Yahoo or MSN Bing search results will show them the direct facebook login page in the results. That way they don’t have to visit the main Facebook page, wade through all the ads then click on the facebook login page.

imageThe second is that people don’t know how to find Facebook in the first place. No one knows that Facebook’s address is http://www.facebook.com , they only know that there’s a place on the net called Facebook and don’t know the directions on how to get there! They probably don’t know how to use a browser or search bar either and hope that by typing facebook login they will find some directions on some other site that will get them there.

The third, and most likely reason, is that people really don’t care about addresses and are just typing in facebook login in a box on their browser and being taken straight there. A lot of people have their browsers set to a default ‘take me to the first site you find’ system.

This can be particularly annoying and depressing for people interested in SEO as, even the top 10 wouldn’t be good enough. To get a new customer, not familiar with how the internet works, you’ve not only got to be number 1, you’ve got to be number one in the only keyword phrase your potential customer is going to search for!

Veterans of the net would be using google and other search engines, trying long tail keywords and doing their best to find what they want searching through pages of serps. I’ve been using the internet since 1994 and that’s what I do. In 2010 the newbies on the net don’t. If they can’t find it in their first search they either give up or call someone!

No wonder internet sales are falling for general items and increasing for extremely niche markets. If you’re a store, forget getting these customers. If you’re just selling ‘shoes’ you won’t get the click, but if you’re selling something like ‘italian handmade high heel stiletto shoes’ you’ve got a better chance of getting that customer.

So, first step, add a facebook login to your main page. It can’t hurt, right? And secondly, create web pages devoted to extremely long tail and niche market keywords. You’ll be better off!
